Governors Island

Governors Island is a small Island off the coast of Manhattan. It is legally considered part of Manhattan. Governors Island had been the home of a U.S. Army Base for approximately 200 years before it became a U.S Coast Guard base in 1966. In January 2003 most of the Island -150 acres were transfered to New York state, while the remaining 22 acres were transfered to the Dept. Of Interior for the Governors Island National Monument. Transportation:
Take the 1 train to South Ferry, then board the Ferry to the Island.

Ferry- operated by NY waterway.
The ferry can be boarded  near the Staten Island Terminal in lower Manhattan for the Satuday or Sunday  visits.
